Who we are
Coleg Cymunedol Y Dderwen has a very distinctive ethos built on strong positive relationships and the desire to help students develop a love of learning and become curious and happy learners with high self-esteem. Helping students develop into confident, creative and reflective adults is a key priority at Coleg Cymunedol Y Dderwen. This is achieved through high quality teaching and careful support for all students throughout their time in school. We regard students as individuals, all different but all equal, with varying strengths and interests. We are proud of the academic and extra-curricular successes our students achieve and are determined to help students fulfil their potential while making the most of the wealth of opportunities on offer at the school.
We believe that we have a moral duty to offer a high quality education. Our approach is simple: we will do whatever it takes to remove any barriers to learning that might potentially impede a young person. We passionately believe that our young people should be entitled to expect, and deserve, the best. All of our students are learning in an environment where they can feel safe, valued, included and proud.
Sixth Form Provision at CCYD
We have a thriving sixth form at CCYD where our students study a range of level 3 courses. We work closely with our partnership schools within Bridgend to offer a wide range of collaboration courses where our students can travel to other venues to study courses. We also collaborate with Bridgend College who offer a range of day time as well as twilight courses in the evening. We have a team of staff who support our sixth form students though year 12 and 13 from settling in to life in the sixth form, to choosing the correct courses, careers advice and support in applying for universities. During the 6th form we have a range of external visits and activities in house, ranging from careers fairs, apprenticeship events and university talks so that our students can familiarise with life outside of education. This allows them to make informed decisions about their future.
Coleg Cymuneddol Y Dderwen has a wide range of facilities for academic, sporting, musical and creative work. Our classrooms are spacious and well equipped to allow for productive teaching and learning to take place. Our external sporting facilities are outstanding with tennis courts, rugby and football fields, and a 3G pitch. Inside we have a large sports hall, multi purpose gym, activities hall and dance studio. Our sixth form students have their own space for private study and they can make use of the vast spaces within the building for quiet study time or peer support. They can also access our state of the art Learning Resource Centre to support their studies. Pupils and Staff have sound relationships built on trust and respect which will have been embedded throughout the pupils’ time at CCYD. Starting from year 7 and through to the end of year 13. We pride ourselves on these strong relationships which allows our students to reach their true potential and become the happy and confident young people equipped for the wider world that we know they can become.
